Haunted Mile
The lesser-known stretch after
Heartbreak Hill hits its stride past Boston College leading runners to Beacon Street and eventually to
Coolidge Corner Station. Boston Marathon icon John Kelley referred to this area--from Lake Street past the
Evergreen Cemetery to Cleveland Circle--as the “Haunted Mile” because of its downhill descent which insiders insist has a devastating effect on the runners’ muscles after consistently going uphill. Many participants from Boston Marathon's past, Kelley would say, met their figurative demise jaunting down this ghostly stretch.
